On 13 June 2026, several heritage societies joined the George Mason chapter of the Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution, in a ceremony to commemorate the Virginia Declaration of Rights that were adopted by the Fifth Virginia Convention on 12 June 1776. These 16 articles authored mainly by George Mason influenced other American Revolutionary War-era documents, to include the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights. This event was held at George Mason’s ancestral home of Gunston Hall in Lorton, VA, as part of a weekend of celebratory events.
The ceremony included a welcome by the Executive Director of the Gunston Hall Foundation, a fife-and-drum corps, color guard with musket volley, wreath presentations at George Mason’s grave, and a speech by an SAR member impersonating George Mason in period costume.
The photo shows members of the Color Guard, Fife-and-Drum Corps, and the Reverend of George Mason’s Pohick Church, at George Mason’s family cemetery.
