237th Anniversary: Crossing of the Dan

The Berryman Green Chapter, Virginia Society, Daughters of the American Revolution; the Dan River Chapter, Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution; the Halifax County Historical Society; the Town of South Boston; and Halifax County Middle School are all co-hosting the 237th Anniversary Commemoration of the Crossing of the Dan River in Virginia during the American Revolution, and invite you to attend and participate. Because of the historical significance the National Society Sons of the American Revolution has now recognized the Crossing of the Dan as a nationally sanctioned event.

On Friday, February 16, at 6:00 PM, a Meet & Greet Seafood Buffet Dinner will be held at Ernie’s Restaurant, 1010 John Randolph Boulevard, South Boston, Virginia 24592. Reservations appreciated, individuals pay for themselves.

On Saturday, February 17, at 10:00 AM, the SAR and DAR will host the annual Crossing commemoration in The Prizery, located at 700 Bruce Street, South Boston, Virginia. No advanced reservations required to attend the Crossing of the Dan on Saturday morning.

Immediately following the commemoration event, guests are invited to visit the permanent exhibit on the 3rd floor of The Prizery, commemorating the Crossing of the Dan, as well as the outdoor exhibit at the Boyd’s Ferry site on the Dan River. A Brunswick stew lunch will be available at a cost of $5.

Weather permitting, a dramatic re-enactment of the Crossing by colonial troops will culminate the day’s activities.

At the conclusion of Saturday’s events in South boston, re-enactors will travel to Woodlawn Plantation where they will set up an encampment and participate in Woodlawn Revolutionary War Days on Sunday, February 18, 2018. The public is invited to attend at Woodlawn, 6011 Clover Road, Randolph, Virginia 24534.
