He enlisted on April 12, 1775 from Epping, New Hampshire and served as a Minuteman at Concord, Massachusetts during the opening of the Revolutionary War in April 1775. He served in Colonel Poor’s Regiment from June 15, 1775 until August 26, 1775 to include fighting in the battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. He signed the Associated Test in 1776, and served under Captain Daniel Gordon or Captain John Norris beginning September 20, 1776.

Dow served as a Sergeant under Captain Samuel Gordon in Saratoga, NY during September 1777, presumably in preparations for an attack on Fort Ticonderoga.
